Motion and Forces Flashcards
What is the difference between weight and mass?
Mass measures how much matter an object contains, whereas weight measures the force of gravity on that object.
What is the difference between a vector and a scalar?
A vector has both direction and magnitude. A scalar only has magnitude
What is the difference between distance and displacement?
Distance is the complete length of the path between points. Displacement is the length of the shortest route from point A to B.
What is the difference between velocity and speed?
Speed is a SCALAR (s and s). Velocity is a VECTOR (v and v)
Define acceleration.
The rate of change of velocity.
Define force.
A force can change the shape or velocity of an object.
Define Momentum
Momentum is the product of mass and velocity.
Define energy.
A property transferred to an object in order to perform work or heat.
How are distance speed and time linked?
Speed = Distance/Time (remember this by thinking speed is distance over time)
What is the formula that links velocity, time and acceleration?
Acceleration = Change in velocity / Change in time (a = Δv/Δt)
What is the typical speed for walking and running?
Walking - 1.5 m/s
Running - 5 m/s
What are typical speeds for cycling and driving a car?
Cycling - 7m/s
Car - 13-30m/s
What will the acceleration of any object in free fall be roughly?
9.8 metres/second squared
