Forces doing work + their effects Flashcards
What are the four types of pathway that energy can be transferred through?
Mechanical Work
Electrical Work
Heating
Radiation
How are energy and work related?
Energy transferred = work done
What is the equation for calculating work done?
Work done = Force x Distance
(E = F x D)
How can Kinetic energy be calculated?
Kinetic energy = 1/2 x Mass x Velocity^2
(KE = 1/2 x M x V^2
What do the triangles in a formula represent?
Change in a quantity e.g. change in height
What is the formula for change in gravitational potential energy?
Change in gravitational potential energy = Mass x Gravitational field strength x Change in height
(∆GPE = M x G x ∆H)
What is the symbol for work done?
E
What is the equation for power?
Work done/Time taken
What is the equation for electrical power?
V x I
What is the definition of a watt?
A watt is one joule transferred in one second.
What are the contact forces?
Normal
Tension
Friction
Air Resistance
What is Newton’s First Law?
An object remains in the same state of motion unless a resultant force acts on it.
What is Newton’s Second law?
Resultant force = Mass x Acceleration
What is Newton’s Third Law?
Whenever two objects interact, they exert equal and opposite forces on each other. (every action has an equal and opposite reaction)
What are the non contact forces?
Magnetic force
Electrostatic force
Gravitational force
