Motion and forces Flashcards
what is speed?
the rate at which an object moves
what is velocity?
speed in a given direction
what is acceleration?
the rate at which velocity changes
what is a force?
anything that can change the state of rest or motion of an object
what does the law of inertia state?
that an object at rest will stay at rest until a force acts upon it and an object in motion will stay in motion at a constant sped in a straight line until a force acts upon it.
eg. a bullet would continue its forward motion in a straight line but friction from the air slows it down and the force of gravity pulls it down to the ground.
what does the law of motion/acceleration state?
that the acceleration of an object depends on its mass and the force acting upon it. The greater the force, the greater the acceleration and the more massive the object the more force it takes to accelerate it.
eg. it takes more force to accelerate a truck and a car because of its massive size compared to a car.
what does newtons 3rd law state?
that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Momentum is related to the amount of energy that a moving object has, and it depends on momentum in a particular direction.
eg. a bullet is fired out of a gun, the bullets forward momentum causes the gun to recoil or move backward.
