Electricity and magnetism Flashcards
what kind of particles attract and repel against one another?
particles with like electrical charges repel each other and particles with unlike particles attract one another
what is an electrical current?
the movement of charged particles, usually electrons
what is a conductor?
a material that allows electrons to move freely from atom to atom. eg metal
what is an insulator?
a material that does not allow electrons to move freely from atom to atom. eg. plastic and rubber
what are semiconductors?
substances whose ability to conduct electricity is midway between that or a conductor as an insulator. eg silicone used in electrical devices.
what does electrical currents produce?
a magnetic field that affects magnetic substances such as iron in the same way a permanent magnet does
what happens in an electromagnet?
the charged particles move along a coil or wire connected to a battery or other power source
in a permanent magnet what creates the magnetic field?
the spinning of electrons
what happens in an electric motor?
magnetic fields are produced by electric fields, the magnetic fields push against one another, turning the shaft of the motor.
