Motion Flashcards
Scalar quantity
A scalar quantity is a physical quantity that has magnitude only. For example mass;
distance; speed.
Vector quantity
A vector quantity is a physical quantity that has both magnitude and direction. For example, force; displacement.
Position
Position is the location of an object relative to a reference point.
Displacement
Displacement is a change in position.
Resultant vector
The resultant vector is the single vector which has the same effect as the original vectors acting together.
Speed
Speed is defined as the rate of change of distance.
Velocity
Velocity is defined as the rate of change of position (or displacement).
Acceleration
Rate of change of velocity
Instantaneous Velocity
The velocity at a particular instant in time.
Free Fall
Something is in free fall when it is falling and the only force acting on it is the gravitational force
