What is distance and its quantity?
Is how far an object moves and it is a scalar quantity
What is displacement and its quantity?
Includes both the distance an object moves, measured in a straight line from the start point to finish point and the direction of that straight line.
Vector quantity
What is a scalar and vector quantity?
Scalar = a measurement that is a number that has no specified direction
Vector = a measurement with size and direction
What are the three typical values?
Walking = 1.5 m/s
Running = 3 m/s
Cycling = 6 m/s
Speed of sound in air = 330 m/s
What is velocity and its quantity?
Speed in a given direction and its a vector quantity
What is the stopping distance?
The sum of the distance the vehicle travels during the driver’s reaction time and the distance it travels under the braking force.
Typical stopping distance for cars?
23 m at 30 mph
96 m at 70mph
Typical reaction times?
0.2 s to 0.9 s
How to test reaction time?
Person has to catch a falling ruler, the distance the ruler falls can be used to work how long the reaction time was.
What is thinking distance and braking distance?
TD = How far the vehicle travels during the driver’s reaction time
BD = How far the vehicle travels from the brakes being applied to the vehicle coming to a stop
