Forces Flashcards
What are the two types of forces?
Contact = the objects are physically touching
Non-Contact = The objects are physically separated
What is directly proportional?
The weight and mass of an object
What can be added in terms of vectors?
If two forces are acting parallel then their magnitudes can e - or +
What are the two types of deformation?
Elastic deformation = all energy transferred by force is stored in the object in a form where it can be released again when the object returns to its original shape
Inelastic deformation = When energy is lost and can’t be recovered
What is directly proportional in terms of springs?
The extension of spring is directly proportional to the force applied
What is Newtons First Law?
If resultant force is zero on stationary object, then the object will not move.
If the resultant force acting on object is zero and object is moving, it will continue to move at the same speed and in the same direction.
What is Inertia?
The tendency of objects to continue in their state of rest
What is Inertia a measure of?
How difficult it is to change the velocity of an object
What is Newton’s 2nd Law?
The acceleration of an object is proportional to the resultant force acting on object, and inversely proportional to the mass of object.
What is Newtons 3rd law?
Whenever two objects interact, the forces they exert on each other are equal and opposite
