Motion Flashcards
Distance Formula
Calculates the length between 2 objects and how far the object traveled.
Distance = Speed x Time
Time Formula
Units of seconds, minutes or hours which measure how long an action takes
Time = Speed / Distance
Speed Formula
The distance an object travels over time
Speed = Distance / Time
Meters/Second
What is changing position?
Changing position is when an object moves from one place to another
What is relative motion?
You need a reference point to compare to determine if something moves.
An object changes position if it moves when compared to a reference point.
Distance
The length of the route you travel
Displacement
Includes the distance between the starting and ending points and the direction in which you travel
How do you calculate average speed?
It’s the total distance travelled divided by the total time taken to travel the distance.
What is instantaneous speed?
The speed of an object at one instant of time
What is velocity?
The speed of something in a given direction.
In a distance time graph, this is plotted on the horizontal axis and distance is plotted on the vertical axis.
What is Graphing Motion?
Graphing motion is when you can show the motion of an object with a distance-time graph.
What is a distance - time graph?
A distance - time graph tells us how far an object travels over time.
What does a steep line mean on a distance line graph?
The steeper the line, the faster the speed.
What does a straight line or horizontal line mean on the distance - time graph?
A straight (horizontal) line means that the object is not moving or is stationary.
What does a straight line or horizontal line mean on the distance - time graph?
A straight (horizontal) line means that the object is not moving or is stationary.
