Motion * Flashcards
What is distance?
how far an object moves
does not include an associated direction, so scalar quantity
What is speed?
the rate of change of distance - distance travelled per unit of time
has no associated direction, so is scalar quantity
How do you calculate the (average) speed?
speed (m/s) = distance travelled (m) / time taken (s)
How do you calculate the distance travelled?
distance travelled = (average) speed x time taken
What is acceleration?
the rate of change of velocity
(the amount that velocity changes per unit time)
How do you calculate acceleration?
acceleration (m/s2)= change in velocity (m/s) / time taken (s)
How do you calculate the distance travelled on a velocity time graph?
Fin area of the shape below the line :
find area of rectangle under straight line
find area of triangle under angled line
add together both areas
What is the equation linking velocity, acceleration and distance?
(final velocity)2 - (initial velocity)2 = 2 x acceleration x distance
m/s m/s m/s2 m
Is velocity a vector or scalar quantity?
vector - magnitude and direction
