Mosquitoes Flashcards
Life cycle of the mosquito
Need water to lay eggs.
Eggs hatch, and all larvae are aquatic. and breath air through a siphon tube
Larva freely move around “wigglers”
Pupate in the water- Pupa look like shrimp
adult emerges from pupa at water surface
Culex spp
eggs laid in rafts on the water. they hatch as a function of temperature
Transmission of West Nile Virus
Aedes spp and Ochlerotatus sp.
individual eggs laid in small depressions on dry ground. Eggs hatch only after proper stimulus (H20)
- Larvae of both feed at an angle to the surface of the water and adult females of these genera have short palps
Anopheles sp.
Eggs laid individually, bubble of air trapped by the frill keeps the egg floating. Larvae feed parallel to surface of water.
Mosquitoes role in EEE
Eastern Equine Encephalitis: they serve as bridge vectors. feed on birds acquiring virus and then feed on dead end hosts (horse or humans)
How to control for EEE
Spraying adulticide; insect growth regulators
repellents and mechanical protection
Environmental controls: draining or filling breeding grounds
