Aim
To see whether a consistent minority of participants could influence a majority to get an incorrect answer in a colour perception test
Procedure
I 172 participants were involved, six participants at a time where asked to estimate the colour of 36 slides are the slides were blue but of differing brightness two of the six participants were confederates there were two conditions
1 to Confederates called the slides in green on all trials
2 The Confederates called the Slade Green 24 times and blue 12 times
Results
Participants in the consistent condition called the slides Green in 8.4% of the trials
Participants in the inconsistent condition can’t the slides are green and only 1.3% of the trials
Conclusion
It is important that those in a minority behave consistently if they are to influence the majority, individual members of a minority must maintain a consistent viewpoint and there needs to be an agreement among the different members of the minority group, inconsistent minorities lack any real influence on majorities
Evaluation
Lab setting is on like real life situations where minorities exert their influence, minorities must also avoid appearing rigidly inflexible
