Mori And Arai Flashcards
Mori and Arai
2010
Aim
Repeat asch’s study without the use of confederates
Procedure
104 participants tested in groups of 4 at a time, 3 participants wore identical glasses with one wearing a different set causing them to observe a different comparison line. Participants then stated their answers publicly with the minority participants always going third. There were men and women in the study
Results
For women only the findings matched asch’s research with them minority of new participants being swayed 4.41 times out of 12 trials on average. Male participants were not swayed by the majority view.
Conclusions
Changes in conformity may have been due to cultural differences (current study done in Japan) and generational differences.
Evaluation: strength
Use familiar people in the experimental groups as it is a more relevant experiment than if we confirm around strangers
Evaluation: Weakness
Conducted in Japan so cannot be generalised to the whole population
