Impact Fuse and its Modes :
Proximity - detonates roughly 1 - 5 meters above the target.
Near Surface Burst - detonates roughly 1 - 3 foot above ground.
Impact - bursts on impact
Delay - explodes roughly .5s - 1.5s after impact.
Cartridge Components of a Mortar Round :
Impact Fuse - Has mode delineation of the round.
High Explosive filler - what the cartridge is filled of
Ignition Tube - in the middle of the round which aids in initiating explosion
Propellent charges - determines distance travelled - the greater the charge the more distance it will travel.
Detonator - at the base of the round where the mortar gets dropped
Fins - help maintain mortars flight path.
Process of firing and prepping mortar fire.
Forward Observer :
Baseplate :
Aiming Poles :
Forward Observer : Spots the target and relays back to fire direction center (could be a different name under ADF.)
Baseplate : Ensure a hole is dug in the ground to allow the mortar to sit and the bubbles on the aiming sight to be level.
Aiming Poles : 50m apart, gunner aligns sight with left most pole
Aiming & Targeting Process :
Elevation Knob -
Elevation Knob - Adjusts elevation of the sight.
Deflection Knob - Adjusts sight left or right.
