Mortality (ch 4?) Flashcards
What is a count?
measuring a disease or health or health care frequency starts with counting cases
Explain proportions
persons included in the numerator are ALWAYS included in the denominator
-it relates a part to the whole
What is the range of proportions?
0 to 1
Explain how ratios work
like a proportion but WITHOUT a specified relationship between the number and denominator
What is rate?
- a proportion in which TIME forms part of the denominator
- are basic tools of epidemiology
What are the elements of a Mortality Rate?
- time pd
- count of deaths occurring in that population group during that time period (numerator)
- specifically defined population group (denominator)
What are the 3 common types of rates?
- crude rates
- specific rates
- adjusted rates
What is crude rates?
considers the whole population
What is specific rates?
considers the differences among subgroups
What is adjusted rates?
adjusts for the differences in subgroups
Does proportional mortality ratio use info about population at risk?
NO, it does not five you info about pop at risk because it uses percentages
What is Years of Potential Life Lost (YPLL)?
recognizes that death occurring in the same person at a younger age clearly involves a greater loss of future productive years than were it to occur at an older age
