affixation
The process of adding affixes (morphemes that change a certain quality) to words.
abbreviation
A shortened form of a written lexeme or phrase. Abbreviations may be used to save space and time, to avoid repetition of long words and phrases, or simply to conform to conventional usage.
shortening
Dropping the endings and sometimes beginnings of words to create a shorter form.
compounding
Process of creating new words by putting to free words together.
blending
Two parts of words are used to create a new one.
backformation
Where a new word is formed by removing an actual, or often just a supposed or incorrectly identified affix. Eg. cohabitate is derived from the word ‘cohabitation’ and not the other way around.
conversion of word class
Process of converting words from one word class to another class without adding any suffixes to the word.
initialism
Made up of the beginning letters in a sequence of words but are said as a series of letters.
contraction
A contraction is when two words are shortened in form and are put together to form one new word, an apostrophe is placed to signify part of a word is missing. More common in spoken and informal written language.
Hypocoristic use of suffixes
When suffixes are added to the standard form of the word to transform it into a form denoting affection or to words resulting from this process.
