What are the three classes of words?
simple: monomorphemic (Ex: tree)
Complex: more than one morpheme, only 1 root (Ex: trees)
Compound: more than 1 root (classroom)
What is a onomatopoeia?
words sound like the thing that they name
What is coinage?
the creation of totally new words
What is borrowing?
adopting words of one language into another
What is blending?
combining parts of two already existing words smog (smoke+fog)
What are the three types of clipping?
Back-clipping: the end is cut off (lab, prof)
Forward-clipping (plane, phone)
Both (flu, fridge)
What is clipping?
cutting off part of a word

cutting off the end of a word (lab, gym)
What is forward-clipping?
the beginning of a word is cut off (plane, phone)
What is backformation?
creating a word by removing a real or supposed affix from another word in the language (opposite of affixation) editor: edit, beggar: beg
What is conversion?
assigns a new lexical category to an already existing word (Ex: warm up (verb) warmup (noun)
What is an acronym?
taking the initial letters of the words in a phrase and pronouncing them as a word (RCMP: pronounced letter-by-letter or NATO pronounced as word)
