Root and stem
Smallest unit of meaning in a word is the root. Take away different morphemes and left with a stem
Unbreaking - word
Breaking - stem
Break - root morpheme
Free and bound
Can’t be divided up any smaller and stand alone as a word
Have to be attached to the root or stem to be used

Prefix
Bound morphemes added to the beginning of the root/stem
- Unstable
Makes it opposite
Suffix
Bound morphemes added to the end of the root/stem
- Breaking
Makes it present tense
Infix
Affix added into a word (not common in english or used in colloquial)
- abso-bloody-lutely
Inflectional Morphemes
Add grammatical information to a word such as tense, possession or plural
- Baking - adds information about the tense
Derivational Morphemes
Change or add to the meaning of a word.
Baker - changes meaning of the word to someone who does that action
Abbreviation
Writing or pronouncing shorter forms of words or string of words. Can be constructed with normal letters/number or context specific graphemes

Acronym
Words that are made up of the initials of words but still form a new word.

Initialism
Are letters that are pronounced as letters instead of the word they represent

Take off a part of the word

Compounding
Add words which exist on their own (free morphemes) and change the meaning

Add together however something falls off

Spork - spoon, fork
Contraction
Formed by removing letters and adding an apostrophe

New words are formed by taking off an affix which is wrongly thought to be part of an old word (process)

Similar to compounding but only bound morphemes (prefixes, suffixes) are added
