Morphology
Morphology is the study of words and their parts. Each word consists of one or more morphemes, which is the smallest unit of meaning within a word.
Root Morphemes
The root of a word is a single morpheme that contains the primary meaning of the word. Roots can have other morphemes attached to them to allow that word to carry extra information.
Stem Morphemes
A word that has meaning but it may not be a single morpheme.
Bound morphemes
A bound morpheme is a grammatical unit that never occurs by itself but is always attached to some other morpheme. The plural morpheme-sin dogs.
Affixes
Affixation is the morphological process whereby anaffixis attached to arootorstem.
Free Morpheme
A free morpheme is a grammatical unit that can occur by itself. However, othermorphemessuch asaffixescan be attached to it. The morphemedog.
