what is morphology?
the study of the structure of words and rules of formation
bound morphemes
only carry meaning or grammatical information when attached to another morpheme
free morphemes
can stand alone and carry the same meaning whether attached to other morphemes or not
derivational morphemes
when they are added to a base, a new word with a new meaning is derived in terms of meaning or word class
inflectional morpheme
mark properties such as tense, number, case and so forth. hey ever change the syntactical category of the word or morphemes to which they are attached to
verbs ending with morpheme ‘s’ are classified as
third person singular present
verbs ending with morpheme ‘ed’ are classified as
past tense
verbs ending with ‘ing’ are classified as
progressive
verbs ending with ‘en’ are classified as
past participle
word formation process: blending
