More Vocabulary Terms Flashcards
Cancer
A disorder, in which some cells have lost the ability to control their growth rate
Cytokinesis
The stage of the cycle, in which the cytoplasm is divided between the two daughter cells
As a cell becomes larger…
Volume increases, but it’s surface area stays the same
After cell division…
Each new cell has a higher surface area/volume ratio than the parent cell
Better to have many smalls cells because…
1) Easier to transport nutrients
2) efficiently lets food in & waste out
Homeostasis
Process by which organisms maintain a relatively stable internal environment
4 bases that make up DNA:
Thymine
Adenine
Cytosine
Guanine
Nucleotide has 3 parts:
Phosphate group (part of backbone) Deoxyribose sugar (part of backbone) Nitrogen (middle, containing base)
Covalent bond
Between sugar & phosphate
Hydrogen bond
Between bases
DNA Replication
Making exact copies of a DNA Molecule
Helipads
An enzyme that breaks down the hydrogen bonds between the bases and forms the replication fork
Messenger RNA
Carries genetic information from the nucleus to ribosomes in the cytosol
Transfer RNA
Binds to amino acids and transfers them to the Messenger RNA
Ribosomal RNA (part of ribosome)
Where proteins are made
