Cell Function/Analogy Flashcards
Cytoskeleton
Function: A series of intercellular proteins that help with shape, support and movement.
Analogy: Teachers because in comparison to the cytoskeleton, the teacher must keep the student clean and in shape. In addition, it supports with the student.
Nucleus
Function: Contains the cells hereditary information and controls the cells growth and reproduction, and it’s the most important organelle In a cell.
Analogy: The principle takes care of everything and keeps everything and everybody on task and in control.
Golgi Apparatus
Function: Takes ordinary molecules and makes them more complex
Analogy: Takes a student and makes them more intelligent.
Cytoplasm
Function: A jelly-like fluid that contains organelles/holds organelles together
Analogy: It’s like glue because it holds things together and cytoplasm holds the organelles in place
Cell Wall
Function: Shapes, supports and protects the cell
Analogy: School walls protects the people and objects inside from the elements outside
Smooth ER
Function: contains enzymes & makes membrane fats
Analogy: A teacher collects assignments and tests like the Smooth ER collects lipids, calcium and other vitamins
Ribosomes
Function: produces proteins
Analogy:
Rough ER
Function: Has ribosomes on it to help process proteins
Lysosomes
Function: Uses enzymes to break down & recycle material
Vacuole
Function: Storage area for water, salts & other materials
Mitochondria
Function: Converts chemical energy stored in food
Chloroplasts
Function: Converts solar energy to chemical energy stored in food
Centrioles
Helps with division in animal cells
