Q

explain 4 adaptations of leaves

A

epidermis cells are transparent and let light through to photosynthetic cells.

waxy cuticle - transparent and lets light through

flattened shape - gives large surface area.

mesophyll cells - packed with chloroplasts for maximum photosynthesis.

Q

define tropisms and give 2 examples

A

tropisms are a plants growth response to a stimulus (a change in the environment) by growing. a positive tropism is when the plant grows towards the stimulus.

plant shoots show positive phototropism when they grow towards light.

plant roots show positive gravitropism when they grow downwards towards the pull of gravity.

Q

define auxins and its process

A

auxins are plant hormones that make cells grow longer. they are affected by light, causing phototropism in the shoots.

auxin is produced in cells near the top of the shoot.
auxin moves to shaded area of shoot.
auxins cause cell elongation
