anaerobic and aerobic respiration Flashcards
compare and contrast aerobic and anaerobic respiration
similarities - both use glucose, food is oxidised for energy production.
differences - aerobic requires oxygen, anaerobic does not. aerobic produces more energy.
advantages and disadvantages of anaerobic respiration
useful for muscle cells when lungs and heart cannot deliver enough oxygen for aerobic respiration. respiration can continue in organisms with little to no oxygen present.
releases much less energy from glucose than aerobic. lactic acid is not removed and it builds up in muscles and the blood. it should be removed after excercise.
uses of aerobic respiration
metabolic processes such as fatty acids to glycerol larger molecules are built from smaller
enables muscle contraction
steadys body temperature in animals
