More for the Final Flashcards
What is the difference between a physical and chemical change?
Physical is when the look of something physically is changed but its foundational composition. Like something freezing
Chemical is when somethings chemical composition is changed. Like something rusting
The Higher units Phrase
Terry's Giant Mother Killed Hector
Lower unites phrase
Donna Couldn't Mush Micro Nancy's Pickled Fries
What are the exceptions to the octet rule?
1) Not enough valence electrons
2) Elements like boron who only have 3 electrons in their outer shell
3) Having a shell expansion
what does moles of something mean?
The number of atoms in someting
how do you tell if something is polar or non polar?
sd
what does electronegativity mean?
the ability of an atom to attract shared electrons
how does electronegativity increase?
From left to right because there are more protons
How does electronegativity decrease?
moving from top to bottom because the cloud of the electron gets bigger shielding the pull of the protons
What does symmetry play in polarity?
Asymmetrical molecules are polar because they have an uneven pull on each other.
what does it mean for something to be polar?
Something having opposite ends. A positive and negative end of something. Like a battery or magnet
What is a polar bond?
a covalent bond in which the electron pair is not shared equally. This creates partial charges
like a H-F OR C-H
What is a non polar bond?
a covalent bond in which the electron pair is shared equally not having a more negative or more positive side
like a H-H OR C-C bond
What is a dispersion force?
attraction between temporary dipoles caused by the movement of electrons in an atom or molecule they are very week
dipole dipole forces
attractions between two the poles or polar molecules
hydrogen bonds
the bonds is attracted only with N O F or Cl are present
what is a pure substance?
Pure substances are defined as substances that are made of only one type of atom or molecule, and the purity of a substance is the measure of the extent to which a given substance is pure. The physical properties of a pure substance include well-defined melting and boiling points.
How does polarity affect the boiling point of things?
the more polar something is the higher the boiling point because this means it has a stronger bond. Also something with a hydrogen bond has a high boiling point
What is a buffer?
A buffer is a solution that can resist pH change upon the addition of an acidic or basic components. It is able to neutralize small amounts of added acid or base, thus maintaining the pH of the solution relatively stable.
In a equallibrium reactions if something happens on one side what happens to the other side?
The reaction movies to the opposite side were change is happening to balance things out
What is a buffer?
Something that resist changes to pH
A mixture of a weak acid with its conjugate base
OR a mixture of a weak base with its conjugate acidRainwater in a pure environment is slightly acidic
since ____________.
Rainwater in a pure environment is slightly acidic
since ____________.
CO2 from the air dissolves in the water. CO2
is an acidic anhydride.
