What are some things to think about when deciding if a tree should stay or be cut down:
Can it cause injury to anyone or anything?
Is it a healthy tree that’s worth keeping?
Is it a vital part of the landscape?
What is it’s purpose?
If you’re going to be doing renovation work and there is a tree nearby that you want to keep, what should you set up?
A Protection Zone
What is a Protection Zone? What is the main concern if you don’t have one set up?
An area that is blocked off at least to the drip line of the tree.
Main concern is compaction
Why is putting fill over tree roots and around the truck harmful to the tree?
FILL KILLS!
It limits the gas exchange that the tree needs from roots to survive
What is the best tool to use when you encounter a compacted area near a tree?
Air Spade
When planting a tree…what is important to know about digging the hole?
Dig a Wide hole, NOT a deep hole.
When planting a plant in the ground, how deep should you plant it?
Slightly higher than the original container level
What should you do with all of the material surrounding the root ball of the tree before you finish the planting process?
REMOVE all synthetic bailing meterial!!!! Plastic, Nylon, WIRE BASKETS
What is the two step approach when removing the wire basket from the root ball?
Before the plant is placed in the hole, remove the bottom few “rungs” of the basket
Place the plant in the hole and set it how you like it, backfill a little so it’s stable and remove the remaining parts of the wire basket.
How do you determine the correct size of the root ball for a specific tree?
Every inch in diameter = 10” of root ball
ex. 7 inch diameter tree needs 70” root ball
Name the two different ways to support a tree after it’s been planted and why you would use each one.
Guying for Large Trees
Staking for small trees
How long should you leave guy wires on the tree for?
12-18 months max
Steps to construct a planting bed:
Chemically or physically remove all unwanted vegetation Lightly rototill to break up the surface Add topsoil and/or Organic Matter Grade it and define the edges Apply High Phosphorus starter fertilizer Thoroughly rototill to 6" depth Install plants Fine grade Add Pre Emergent Herbicide Install Mulch and Rake to finish
What are the reasons for pruning?
Health and Sanitation Size and Shape control Rejuvenation To Direct Growth To Develop Form To maintain Form and Health To Restore Form
Give a few examples why you would prune for Health and Sanitation
To remove dead, diseased or damaged, or insect-infested wood
Give a few examples why you would prune for Size and Shape Control
To reduce or maintain a certain plant size
To alter or maintain a certain shape
What is Rejuvenation pruning and Why would you do it?
It is the drastic removal of some or all of the plants branches…..To encourage new, young, vigorous growth
When pruning to direct the growth of a plant, what are the two different Cuts you can make?
Heading Cut - removes the branch to a stub, bud or small branch.
Thinning Cut - Remove branch at its origin or down to a larger branch.
Pruning into fanciful shapes or geometric forms is called
Topiary
pruning a plant into 2 dimensions, usually flat against a wall is called
Espalier
An ancient oriental art form of pruning
Bonsai
Prune to increase the amount of sunlight reaching flowering branches, encouraging the ripening of of most fruits
Fruit Production.
_____ wood carries flower buds throughout the winter.
Old
When do New Wood plants usually flower?
Summer or Fall
