Act 1 Scene 1- Bosola talking about the cardinal, makes it known that it’s very ironic the cardinal is holy yet evil. He’s worse than the devil.
Some fellows they say are possessed with the devil but this great fellow were able to possess the greatest devil and make him worse
Act 1 scene 2- Ferdinand offers Bosola money to spy on the Duchess, Bosola being the omniscient person he is makes an observation about Ferdinand’s nature
Sometimes the devil doth preach
Act 1 scene 1- Antonio makes a great observation about the government after returning from the corrupt French court.
This foul melancholy will poison all his goodness
Act 4 scene 1- The Duchess emphasises metatheatricality and makes everything just that much more dramatic.
I account this world a tedious theatre for I do play a part in’t ‘ gainst my will
Act 4 scene 2- the bird metaphor again, happens quite a lot in this play. Bosola talks abt being caged in relation to the soul
Dids’t thou ever see a lark in a cage. Such is the soul in the body
Act 4 scene 2- Bosola is trying to find his identity. He is nothing when he is not defined as something by someone else.
‘I am the common bellman’
Act 4 Scene 2- Bosola going on an existential rant. Death and life are horrible apparently
Their life a general mist of error; their death a hideous storm of terror
Act 4 Scene 2- Cariola chips in and calls them what they really are.
Hence villains, tyrants, murderers! Alas!
