Moral Reasoning Flashcards
Walker (1989)
in his longitudinal study of 233 subjects, they participated in interviews where they discussed hypothetical dilemma’s and personal dilemma’s which were scored for both moral stage and moral orientation.
the results revealed very few violations of the stage sequence over the longitudinal interval.
this provides support for Kohlberg’s moral stage model from pre-conventional to post-conventional
Killen and Smetana (2014)
Stated that children face moral issues with their families from early on an tensions between a child’s own desires and needs, control, disciple, justice and rights are negotiated daily between children and their parents
such research indicates the role of early social experiences in moral development and thus supports Kohlberg’s theory
Snarey (1985)
challenged the major empirical assumptions underlying Kohlberg’s claims for cross-cultural universality. He found bias’ in favour of complex urban societies and middle-class populations
in folk tribal and villages, there was no post-conventional reasoning
this therefore highlights a significant flaw in Kohlberg’s work as it was biased towards urban societies
Gershoff (2002)
his meta-analysis indicated that corporal punishment is moderately associated with poor moral internalisation
thus Kohlberg’s theory is in fact accurate
