Moraines Flashcards
What is a moraine
accumulation of till lodgement,
whether dumped by an active glacier or left behind as a deposit after glacier retreat
Two types of moraines
- Subglacial: Moraines formed beneath glacier
- Ice-marginal: Formed along margins of a glacier
Land formation subglacial moraines can form
DRUMLINS
Moraines are primarily composed of lodgement till
In some places beneath active glaciers, lodgement till is moulded into streamlined mounds called drumlins
Land formations ice-marginal moraines can form
Lateral Moraine (linear)
Medial Moraine (linear)
Terminal or end moraine (linear)
Recessional Moraine (linear)
Push Moraine (linear)
Hummocky or Disintegration Moraine (non-linear
Lateral Moraine (linear) Appearance
A ridge of till deposited along valley floor edge
Lateral Moraine (linear) Formation
Debris from freeze-thaw weathering of valley side falls onto glacier
Transported and deposited at edge of glacier when it melt
Medial Moraine (linear) Appearance
A ridge of till deposited down middle of valley floor
Medial Moraine (linear) Formation
two lateral moraines converge towards each other combining to form a medial moraine.
Ice flow is parallel to each other
Terminal or end moraine (linear) Appearance
High ridge of till extending across valley at right angles to valley side
Terminal or end moraine (linear) Formation
Till deposited at max extent of a glacier, especially
Recessional Moraine (linear) Appearance
Lower ridge till across valley, parallel to terminal moraine
Recessional Moraine (linear) Formation
till deposited during interruptions in retreat of glacier ice
When glacier remained stationary long enough for a ridge of material to build up
Push Moraine (linear) Appearance
Ridge of moraine with stones tilted upwards
Push Moraine (linear) Formation
Any morainic material at glacier snout will be pushed forward during advance.
Faster the velocity of advance, steeper angle of tilt or stones.
Transverse to ice flow
Hummocky or Disintegration Moraine (non-linear) Appearance
Chaotic jumble of till mounds
