Waxing Crescent
The moon appears to be less than a half lit by direct sunlight. The sunlight is increasing on the right side.
New moon
The moon is located inbetween the earth and sun. It is not visible
First Quarter
The right half of the moon is lit up
Waxing Gibbous
The moon looks more than half lit but is not fully lit. The light we see is increasing.
Full Moon
The moon’s lit side is completely facing the earth. It appears to be complete. The entire moon’s lit face is facing us.
Waning Gibbous
The moon appears to be more than half but not completely lit by direct sunlight. There is now less light. On the right side there is a shadow.
Last ( third) Quarter
the left side is lit up
Waning Crescent
The moon appears to be lit partly but less than one-half lit by direct sunlight. The light on the moon’s disk is decreasing on the right side.
Waxing
The amount of light on the moon is increasing on the right
Waning
The amount of light is decreasing on the right.

It takes 28 days for the moon to make one revolution

The path the moon follows around the earth.
Crescent
The phases of the moon that has less light than a first or third quarter moon phases
Gibbous
The phases of the moon where there is more light than the first or third quarter moons.
