Hypomania
Elevated mood, increased physical and mental activity, talkative, over friendly and less constrained by social norms.
Social functioning broadly intact
Manic episode
Elevated mood, increased physical and mental activity, talkative, over friendly and less constrained by social norms.
No psychotic symptoms but
Increased distractibility and reckless, inappropriate or unpredictable behaviour.
Manic episode with psychosis
Elevated mood, increased physical and mental activity, talkative, over friendly and less constrained by social norms.
With Delusions +/ Hallucinations +/ severe communication difficulties.
Bipolar Affective Disorder
2 episodes of mania
OR
1 manic episode and 1 depressive episode
Depression
- Subjective lowering of mood
- Lack of energy
- Reduced concentration
- Reduced activity (psycho-motor retardation)
- Ahedonia
- Reduced self-esteem, guilt or worthlessness
- Appetite changes
- Sleep disruption
- Loss of libido
Mild, Moderate, Severe, Severe with psychosis
Recurrent depressive episode
2 or more episodes of depression only
Persistent mood disorders
Cyclothymia- persistent mood instability not meeting BAD
Dysthymia- chronic depressed mood not severe enough to be major depression
Phobic Anxiety Disorder
Anxiety related to a particular, not immediately dangerous, situation.
Avoidance or dread of trigger
Physical symptoms
eg. Agoraphobia, Social Phobia, Isolated phobias
Panic Disorder
AKA episodic paroxysmal anxiety
- palpitations
- chest pain
- choking
- dizzy
- derealisation
Generalised anxiety disorder
persistent anxiety- often focused on a worry such as injury or accident- although it will continue and shift to other foci
OCD
Recurrent obsessional thoughts and compulsive acts.
1. OWN thoughts but unpleasant and unwanted
2. Compulsions are not enjoyable but offer temporary relief and serve some - usually illogical - purpose
Can be primarily ruminations or compulsions or mixed type
Acute Stress Reaction
Dazed, inattentive, disorientated.
physical anxiety symptoms, disruption of affect, psycho-motor changes and amnesia may all occur
Lasts Hours- Days after event.
Normal varient
PTSD
Delayed or protracted maladaptive stress response.
- Flashbacks / Nightmares
- Emotional blunting and ahedonia
- Detachment and avoidance
- Insomnia
- Depression and anxiety
Adjustment Disorder
Conduct disorder +/- other symptoms following period of upheaval
Dissociative Disorder
Loss of control of actions and integrity of self with no organic cause:
Amnesia / Fuge / Stupor / Trance and possession / motor disorder / convulsions / anaesthesia / DID
