What is the difference between a Mood and an Affect?
Mood - Subjective experience of emotional state. Personal.
Affect - External state of a person, visible emotional state
Define Depression
An over-expression or elaboration of sadness or grief.
What are some risk factors for depression?
History (personal Familial) Prior Suicide attempts Female Post-partum period Medical comorbidity Chronic conditions Lack of social supports Low Socioeconomic status Workplace stress Stressful life events Personal history of sexual abuse Current substance abuse
This mood disorder can be attributed to the hypersecretion of cortisol and deregulation of serotonin.
Depression
How is Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) defined?
Depressive episodes that last at least 2 weeks or more.
Symptoms of MDD include:
- Disinterest in all activities
- Changes in weight and appetite
- Sleep disruptions
- Feelings of uselessness, hopelessness, and guilt
- Preoccupation of failures
- Depressed mood
- Decreased Energy
- Agitation
This is defined as a chronic low mood with some symptoms of depression lasting 2 or more years.
Dysthimia
This is defined as experiencing reversed vegetative symptoms (increased sleep, appetite and weight), with heightened sensitivity to rejection and mood reactivity.
Atypical Depression
Define postpartum depression
Similar to major depression but follows childbirth.
May be biochemical, emotional or socially based)
This mood disorder is associated with changes in weather and is typically seen in northern climates.
Seasonal Affective disorder (SAD)
What is depression with psychosis?
Depressive symptoms associated with a loss of touch with reality (Hallucinations/delusions)

What are some symptoms of Mania?
Euphoria Very outgoing/intrusive Manipulative May be abusive to others Ø need for sleep Pressure of speech Delusions of grandeur Hyperactivity Exaggerated self-esteem Poor judgments Psychotic (severe cases) Spending sprees Increased Sex drive Abuse of substances Provocative/aggressive behaviours Denial that anything is wrong
Differentiate between Bipolar I, Bipolar II, Bipolar III, & Rapid cycling Bipolar.
Bipolar I - Cycles of acute mania with or without depression
Bipolar II - Cycles of hypomania with major depression
Bipolar III - Antidepressant induced hypomania
Rapid Cycling - Atleast 4+ depressive or mania episodes a year
