Also called affective disorders; pervasive alterations in emotions that are manifested by depression, mania or both.
Mood Disorders
Normal feelings of sadness are quite appropriate in many situation (Losing a loved one, business goes bankrupt, failing in a subject). However, they’re short lived and do not completely and permanently alter a person’s functioning ability.
Depressive Disorders (Major Depressive Disorder)
Diagnosed when a person’s mood cycles between extreme of mania and depressions.

Mood Disorder due to General Medical Condition
Characterized by at least 2 years of depressed mood for more days than not with some additional, less severe symptoms that do not meet the criteria for a major depressive episode.
Dysthymic Disorder
Characterized by 2 years of numerous period of both hypomanic symptoms that do not meet the criteria for bipolar disorder.
Cyclothymic Disorder
Characterized by a prominent and persistent disturbance in mood that is judged be a direct physiologic consequence of ingested substances such as alcohol, drugs or toxins.
Substance-Induced Mood Disorder
Characterized by a prominent and persistent disturbance in mood that is judged to be a direct physiologic consequence of medical condition (degenerative neurologic conditions)
Mood Disorder due to General Medical Condition
