Seasonal affective disorder cause
suppression of melatonin and delayed circadian rhythm
major depression - needs to not appear
no hallucinations, no manic or hypo manic episodes
Major depression diagnosis
least 1 major depressive episode
5 or more symptoms present for a 2 week period: (at least one is 1 or 2)
- depressed mood
- loss of interest or pleasure
- significant weight loss or gain
- insomnia or hypersomnia
- psychomotor agitation or retardation
- fatigue or loss of energy
- feeling worthless or excessive inappropriate guilt
- inability to think, concentrate or indecisivness
- recurring thoughts of death
- recurring suicidal ideation, suicide attempt or plan for suicide
Bipolar 1
major depressive episodes alternate with mania
Bipolar 2
major depressive episodes alternate with hypomania (milder)
Cyclothemic disorder
marked by numerous episodes of hypomanic symptoms and mild depressive symptoms -> resembles dysthemia
manic episodes
last at least 1 week - 3 or more symptoms
1. inflated self-esteem
2. decreased need for sleep
3. more talkative
4. flight of ideas - racing thoughts
5. distractability
6 increased goal-directed activity or psychomotor agitation
7. activities with high potential for painful outcomes
