▫️Also called Effective Disorder
▫️Are pervasive alterations in emotions that are manifested by depression, mania, or both.
▫️they interfere w a person’s life, plaguing him or her w drastic and long term sadness, agitation, or elation
Mood Disorder
____is diagnosed when a person’s mood fluctuates to extremes of mania and/or depression
Bipolar disorder
is a distinct period during which mood is abnormally and persistently elevated, expansive, or irritable.
Typically, this period lasts about 1 wk, but may be longer for some individual
Mania
🔺manic episodes include inflated self esteem or grandiosity; decrease sleep; excessive and pressured speech.
🔺often deny problems, placing blame on others for difficulty they experience
a Disorder characterized by mild mood swings between hypomania and depression w/o loss of social or occupational functioning
Cyclothmic disorder
disorder characterized by a significant disturbance in mood that is direct physiologic consequence of ingested substances such as alcohol, other drugs, or toxins.
Substance-induced depressive or bipolar disorder
is a disorder people experience increase sleep, appetite, and carbohydrate cravings; weight gain; interpersonal conflict; irritability; and heaviness in the extremities beginning in late autumn and abating in spring and summer
Winter depression or fall onset SAD
this type of disorder is less common, with symptoms of insomnia, weight loss, and poor appetite lasting from late spring or early summer until early fall
Spring onset SAD
It is a mild, predictable mood disturbance occurring in first several days after delivery of a baby. Symptoms: labile mood and affect, crying spells, sadness, insomnia, and anxiety.
Postpartum or maternity blues
is a severe and debilitating psychiatric illness with acute onset in the days following childbirth. Symptoms: fatigue, sadness, emotional lability, poor memory, and confusion
Postpartum psychosis
is defined as recurrent, moderate psychological and physical symptoms that occur during the week before menses and resolve with menstruation
Premenstrual dysphoric disorder
Is a type of depression that causes someone to remain speechless and motionless for an extended period.
*flat face and stare blankly when being talked with.

is a depression that involves several specific symptoms, including increased appetite or weight gain, sleepiness or excessive sleep, marked fatigue or weakness, moods that are strongly reactive to environmental circumstances, and feeling extremely sensitive to rejection
Atypical depression
A mental state characterized by false beliefs, known as delusion, or false sights or sounds, known as hallucinations
Psychotic depression
▫️a disorder that lasts 2 weeks or longer
▫️changes in appetite and weight, sleep and psychomotor activity, decreased energy, recurrent thoughts of death or suicide with plans or attempts
▫️May have some delusions or hallucinations
▫️impairs social, occupational and other functioning
Major Depressive Disorder
▫️A chronic mood disturbance where a person reports low mood almost daily over a span of at least two years
▫️no episode of mania
▫️formerly known as Dysthymia or Chronic Depressive Disorder
Persistent Depressive Disorder
Two of the six symptoms for PDD to be diagnosed
- Poor appetite or overeating
- Insomnia or hypersomnia
- Low energy or fatigue
- Low self esteem
- poor concentration or difficulty making decisions
- Feelings of hopelessness
Warning Signs of suicide:
- verbal cues
- Behavioural cues
- Situational cues
