Fort Emmanuel

A

Constructed by the Portuguese in 1503

It’s a ruined fort located at fort kochi beach in kochi (Cochin), Kerala

Named after Manuel 1, the king of Portugal it was the first Portuguese port in asia

In 1503 the kingdoms of Cochin granted permission to Afonso de Albuquerque to build fort Emanuel near the water front of the Arabian Sea

Fort kochi remained in the Portuguese possession until 1663, when Dutch captured the territory and destroyed the Portuguese institutions

The Dutch held the fort in their possession until 1795, when the British took control defeating the Dutch.

In 1806 the Dutch, and later British, had destroyed most of the fort walls and its bastions
