First eruption of ash and steam - July 1995. Pyroclastic flows March 1996. June - August 1997 huge pyroclastic flows and 9km ash cloud. October - December further eruptions. July 1999, large eruption.

35,000 feet.
Plymouth
The capital Plymouth, and most southern and easterly areas were destroyed by pyroclastic flows.
Pop relocated
2/3 of the population were relocated to the “safe zone”.
Problems in the north
Lack of adequate infrastructure and services in the north. Overcrowding and less permeable soils which limited traditional methods of sewage disposal
Water supply before
85% of domestic water supply from springs and 15% from wells
Water supply after
50% of springs in impact area lost and 100% of wells lost.
Monitoring
Continuous monitoring from islanders and a US geological team
Sick and Elderly evac
The sick and elderly were evacuated first as a precaution on 8/08/1995
Plymouth evac
Plymouth was evacuated on 4/12/95
Total evac
By April, 5000 people had been evacuated to the north of the island, with the other 50% leaving Montserrat.
British government aid
British government pledged £55 million in aid and offered £2,400 to each adult wanting to leave the island.
Total amount allocated to redevelopment
Over the 3 years £75m was allocated to redevelopment.
