Where is Montserrat?
It is a Caribbean island southeast of the Dominican Republic.
Cause of the eruption?
The Atlantic Plate was sub ducted beneath the Caribbean Plate.
Effects (Environmental)?
2/3 of the island was covered in dust.
Floods due to ash blocking the valleys.
Forest fires due to pyroclastic flows.
Effects (Economic)?
Capital (Plymouth) became a ghost town. Airport closed. Farmland destroyed. Loss of small business. Loss of tourism. Transport links destroyed.
Effects (Social)?
23 people died. Capital (Plymouth) became a ghost town. Farmland destroyed. Forest fires. Schools and hospitals destroyed. Harsh living conditions for those who remained. Half population left and not returned. Transport links destroyed.
Prediction?
Despite modern advances it was still difficult to predict. GPS and gas emissions were both used however scientists knew an eruption was imminent so people were evacuated.
Short term responses?
Immediately after the eruption aid was given from across the globe. The priority was to evacuate those left on the island. Aid was also given in the form of compensation and redevelopment.
Long term responses?
Roads were rebuilt and exclusion zones were mapped, residents have been given help if they wanted to leave the island.
