Leukotriene Modifiers
Routes:
PO
Pharmacologic Action:
blocks leukotriene receptors which decreases inflammation, bronchoconstriction, and vascular permeability-used as a long-term preventive measure
Major adverse reactions:
possible SI; others in the class besides montelukast can be hepatotoxic
Nursing Interventions:
Liver function testing; observe for behavioral changes
Client Education:
report manifestations of liver dysfunction; report behavioral changes; take at least 2 hours before exercise, otherwise take in the evening with a full glass of water
Contraindications:
liver dysfunction; status asthmaticus; not for administration during acute exacerbation
Interactions:
phenobarbital, phenytoin, and rifampin will decrease efficacy of the drug
