Q

Attention

A

Very similar to attention getter. Fulfilling the need of the introduction. On an outline it should look like an intro. What we previously discussed as options of attention-getters for the introduction.

Q

Need

A

Establish and describe the problem that is at hand. Transition into the first main step we’re going to discuss in some way, we’re moving into the body.describing a problem that exists, identifying a need that has to be addressed, “exigence” This is where you pull from information you already have. Why should we be uncomfortable with the status quo. This is not a good current state of affairs we need to do something to improve on the situation. Backed by evidence. Showing ramifications Ex. What will this look like in 2020 Present the case that this is a major problem that we need to focus on.

Q

Satisfaction

A

It’s really the solution step. You gave me the Problem, how do I fix it? You’ve got me all riled up, there’s a problem that is not good, I need to know how to address it. Second body point. This is a solution to the problem that I just described. Explain solution, provide some level of detail. During this stage, you can also say “I know some of you may not think this is the most popular idea, but why is this the best thing you can do…these are all notable charitable causes, but this is the most relevant” Anticipate what counterarguments your audience may have and refute them.

Q

Visualization

A

The solution I just proposed, what effect does this have. You can choose a strategy. Positive effect (“If you do this, look at the wonderful effects that it has. Play on hope”

Negative effect(“If no change is made, what will this look like. Create a bleak type of future. Play on fear“)

Contrast (“I’m going to present both, show the negative, If we don’t do this, this is what you can expect 2020 to look like, but if action is taken today this is what we can look forward to“)

Last main point you make. Visual image and some kind of story let’s us know how osmething is going to play out

Q

Action

A

appears in conclusion, last effort to Encourage someone to do something. Signals the end, quick summary “we talked about this problem, talked about the solution and saw the positive effects that it has..so based what we just told you, what can you do?” as specific as possible. What can I specifically do? Ex. Write to a congressman, dean, what do you want me to do. Give me their e-mail/address. Recyclable bags. Not the final thing you’re going to say, you still need a clincher type sentence that wraps it all back.
