Monosaccharides Flashcards
What are monosaccharides?
The monomers from which large carbohydrates are made.
What are some examples of monosaccharides?
Glucose, Fructose and Galactose.
What type of sugar is glucose?
A hexose sugar - contains six carbon atoms in each molecule.
What are isomers?
Molecules with the same molecular formula as eachother but with the atoms connected in different ways.
What are the two isomers for glucose?
Alpha and beta glucose.
In an alpha-glucose molecule, where is the OH?
It is on the bottom.
In a beta-glucose molecule, where is the OH?
It is at the top.
What bond joins two monosaccharides to form a disaccharide?
A glycosidic bond.
What two monosaccharides make Sucrose?
A glucose molecule and a fructose molecule.
What two monosaccharides make Lactose?
A glucose molecule and a galactose molecule.
