Q

What is pure breeding?

A
  • if pea plants with green pods are bread repeatedly with each other so that they consistently give rise to plants with green pods, they are said to be pure-breeding for the character of green pods, they are said to be pure-breeding for the character of green pods
  • pure-breeding strains can be bred for almost any character
  • this means that the organisms are homologous (that is they have two alleges that are the same) for that particular gene

Q

What is first filial or F1 generation?

A
  • if pure breeding green-pod plants are the crossed with pure-breeding yellow-pod plants, all the offspring, known as the first filial or f1 generation produce green pods
  • this means that the allele for green pods is dominant to the allege for yellow pods, which is therefore recessive

Q

What happens when the heterozygous pants of the F1 generation are crossed with another?

A

-this produces F1 intercoms, the offspring known as the second filial or F2 generation are always in an approximate ratio of three plants with green pods to each one plant with yellow pods

Q

What is the law of segregation?

A
  • in diploid organisms, characteristics are determined by alleges that occur in pairs
  • only one of each pair of alleges can be present in a single gamete

Q

how do you carry out a monohybrid cross?

A
  • choose oneletter to representeach characteristic based on the characteristics first letter
  • upper case letter represents dominan feature and lowercase represents
  • wirte down the parents phenotypes and alleles
  • circle the gametes produced by the parents
  • produce a punnet square
  • state the phenotype and ration of each genotype produced
