Monoamine Oxidase Flashcards
What biological factor works with childhood adversity
Monoamine Oxidase
What is Monoamine oxidase
MOA is an enzyme that breaks down neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin
Study that measure MOA
Nilson et al (2006)
Nilson et al (2006)
Measure MOA from individuals blood levels who had committed offences and were at risk of violent and sexual offenses. the low activity of MOA increased transmitters causing sexual behavior. MOA had to be considered with psychosocial factors as effect not found when excluding environmental factors
Good thing about Nilson et al (2006)
Showed the interaction between environment and biological factors
Specific effect of childhood maltreatment on MOA levels study
Caspi et al, 2002
Caspi et al 2002
sample of 500 children, the ones who had experienced childhood abuse had lower MOA compared to those who had not experienced childhood abuse.
Difficult about gene studies
Difficult to single out a single gene as there are so many genetic effects and genes can play more than one role when they interact with the environment
Limitation of Nilson et al 2006
Based on self-reports which can be ambigous and were only at risk, had not committed.
