Monitoring and periodontal indices Flashcards
Whats the definition of screening
To find cases with disease within a population
Whats the definition of monitoring
To follow up a patients disease progression after treatment
What is periodontal indices
- A form of periodontal monitoring
- Screens for disease & helps grade the level to reach a diagnosis
- Used to monitor response to treatment
- Research tool in clinical trials, public health and epidemiology
When do we assess the extent of the disease
- Before treatment baseline
- After completion of treatment
- At review visits
What is plaque the key factor in
- The aetiology of gingivitis
- The aetiology of periodontitis
- The success or failure of periodontal treatment
What does a plaque index do
- Gives overall % of plaque in the mouth
- Allows you to show the patient where the plaque is
- Allows tailored oral health information
Describe the 6 point pocket chart
- Apply jelly on a cotton wool roll to patient’s lips
- Ask patient to chew on disclosing tablet
- Swish tablet around for 30 seconds
- Spit out and rinse gently once
- Record presence of plaque on plaque chart
What does a plaque score give
- A low mark for clean teeth
- A high mark for plaque covered teeth
What does a plaque free score give
- A high mark for clean teeth
- A low mark for plaque covered teeth
How do you do a marginal bleeding index
- Insert PCP 10 probe into gingival sulcus mid-buccally
- Run the probe towards the mesial papilla
- Insert the probe mid-buccally again
- Run the probe towards the distal papilla
- Run the probe similarly on the palatal/lingual surface
What does periodontal indices include
- Bleeding on probing + probing pocket depths
- Attachment levels
- Mobility index
- Furcation indices
- Supprication
When is a site positive for BOP
If bleeding occurs with or shortly after probing
Describe the probing pocket depth chart
- Insert PCP 10 probe to full pocket depth
- Read off pocket depths in mms
- Record on pocket depth chart
- 6 sites per tooth
Describe the attachment levels
- Measure from CEJ to the base of the pocket
- Detection of subgingival reference point
Where is recession measured from and to
- Measurement from gingival margin to CEJ, where gingival margin is apical to the CEJ
Describe the different grades of the furcation involvement
- Grade 1 - horizontal bone loss of less 1/3rd width of tooth
- Grade 2 - horizontal bone loss of greater than 1/3rd width of tooth
- Grade 3 - horizontal through and through involvement
How is mobility graded
- Grade 1 - 1mm horizontal movement
- Grade 2 - Over 1mm horizontal movement
- Grade 3 - Vertical movement
