- lack of physical activity: obesity, triglycerides, diabetes
- dietary: cholesterol leads to atheroslerosis; salt causes a shift of water, strain on heart
- heavy alcohol consumption
- nicotine: damages arteries leading to narrowing
- stress: chronic SNS stimulation, increased renin levels, activates RAAS
