Monday Diebs Flashcards
difference between selective and differential media
Selective Media
Contains compounds that selectively inhibit growth of some microbes but not others
Differential Media
Contains an indicator, usually a dye, that detects particular chemical reactions occurring during growth
what common bacterial are catalase positive
STAPH
What common coccus bacteria are coagulase positive? coagulase negative?
what actually does the coagulating?
staph aureus - coagulase positive
staph saprophyticus - coagulase negative
Bound coagulase (the type of coagulase in the bacterial cell wall) binds to fibrinogen in plasma and clumps up the bacterial cells.
free coagulase is an extracellular enzyme that causes formation of clots
when would you use a novobiocin sensitivity test
what does novobiocin do
to differentiate between:
Staphylococcus saprophyticus (resistant)
Staphylococcus epidermidis (sensitive).
novobiocin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase
NO StRESs
NOvobiocin—Saprophyticus is Resistant;
Epidermidis is Sensitive.
first line treatment for S. sapro
augmentin
E coli is
oxidase _____
indole _____
(negative or positive?)
oxidase-negative
indole positive
things in the Enterobacteriaceae family
salmonella, e. coli, klebsiella, proteus, enterobacter to name a few
gram negative
type 1 pilus
binds uroplakins and initiates infection
all e coli have it but not all express it
p fimbriae
causes infections to move up from the bladder into the kidney
