Monatomic, Molecular & Metallic Lattices Flashcards
What are the 3 types of elements?
Monatomic elements
Molecular elements
Metallic Lattices
What are Monatomic Elements?
Elements that consist of 1 single atom.
(They are rare)
Mono=one
What are some examples of monatomic elements?
Helium (He)
Argon (Ar)
Krypton (Kr)
What are molecular elements?
Contain more than 1 element, but all atoms are the same.
Most non-metallic elements are molecules.
The molecular formula tells us how many atoms are present.
What are some examples of molecular elements?
Hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, fluorine, and chlorine.
What are metallic lattices?
Large grid like structures.
Make metals strong and solid
Particles can slide and move
How do you know when elements exist as molecular elements?
A molecule is a cluster of 2 or more atoms tightly bonded together. Cl2 (chlorine), O2 (oxygen gas) and F2 (Florine) all contain 2 atoms so they exist as molecules.
