Basic Terminology Flashcards
What are atoms?
The building block from which every substance is made.
The building blocks of matter.
What are lattices?
A large grid-like structure that repeats the same arrangement of atoms.
What does the scientific term “lustrous” mean?
It means that a material can be polished to become shiny.
What is a molecule?
A cluster of two or more atoms bonded together.
What is an element?
A substance made up of one type of atom.
For example in carbon and oxygen the atoms are arranged idifferently but are the same atom.
What does the word “monatomic” mean in chemistry?
An element made of a single atom.
Why does the scientific word, “ductile” mean?
It means that the substance can be stretched into wires.
What is a compound?
A compound is a substance made up of two or more different kinds of atoms held together by chemical bonds.
Example: water- only 1 type of molecule, yet 2 different types of atom.
