What Monarchy does the UK have?
Constitutional monarchy:
- monarchy is the head of state
- today monarchy has few powers
What are the two types of powers?
Actual prerogative powers - these are exercised by the monarch.
Actual notional powers - these are exorcised by the government in his name.
What actual prerogative powers does the king have (being)?
Being:
- Head of the State, Executive, Legislative and the Judiciary
- Supreme Governor of C of E
- Head of Commonwelath
What actual prerogative powers does the king have (doing)?
Doing:
- meeting PM once a week
- knighthoods
- visits heads of state
- kings speech
- senior appointments
What notional powers are there?
- final law draft approval
- declare war/peace
- list of honours (new year)
- royal pardons
- summoning/dissolving parliament
- writes law agendas
How is the monarchy funded?
Sovereign grant - a lump sum given once a year to the king.
Privy Purse - money generated from king owned assets.
Personal income.
