What is OFSTED?
Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services & Skills.
They inspect and regulate education and training for learners of all ages.
It inspects: nurseries & primary schools, secondary schools, pupil referral units and some private schools.
Different types of state funded schools?
Community Schools/Colleges - ordinary primary/secondary schools.
Academy Schools - state schools which are publicly funded.
Free Schools - they are new, fully self governing, publicly funded. Can deviate from national curriculum. Own school hours/pay.
Foundation Schools
Trust Schools
Special Schools
Voluntary Aided /Voluntary Controlled Schools
Faith Schools
Grammar schools
What does the Department of Education do?
Department for Education (DfE) has responsibility for education and children’s services in England.
Two main functions:
To be the principal adviser on education policy nationally.
Ensuring that its policies are delivered by a range of organisations, including Local Education Authorities (LEAs) and school governing bodies.
What is an LEA?
Local Education Authorities is a council body in charge of administering education in a particular area – usually the area of the council’s jurisdiction generally e.g Lancashire ( a county council) or Leeds ( a metropolitan borough) both act as LEAs.
