momentum, impact and impulse Flashcards

1
Q

difference between a scalar and vector quantity?

A

scalar quantity is described by magnitude
vector quantity is described by magnitude and direction
- E.g. distance is scalar and displacement is vector

Q

whats an impulse and how do you work it out?

A

the length of time a force is applied to an object or body
- IMPULSE = FORCE X TIME and it is eaqual to a change in momentum

Q

whats an impact?

A

is a high force or shock applied over a short period of time when two bodies collide.
- impulses can be shown on a force-time graph
