momentum, impact and impulse Flashcards
difference between a scalar and vector quantity?
scalar quantity is described by magnitude
vector quantity is described by magnitude and direction
- E.g. distance is scalar and displacement is vector
whats momentum and how do you work it out?
the amount of motion and object posesses.
MOMENTUM = MASS X VELOCITY
whats an impulse and how do you work it out?
the length of time a force is applied to an object or body
- IMPULSE = FORCE X TIME and it is eaqual to a change in momentum
whats an impact?
is a high force or shock applied over a short period of time when two bodies collide.
- impulses can be shown on a force-time graph
which of these are scalar and which of these are vectors?
Distance / Displacement
Mass / Weight
Velocity / Speed
Momentum / Impulse
The vectors are : displacement , weight , velocity , Momentum and impulse
The scalar are : distance, mass and speed
